As Lady Justice Brewing, a cherished, award-winning, queer woman-owned brewery, prepares to transition from its roots in Aurora to a new chapter in Englewood, there’s a mix of nostalgia, anticipation and sadness in the air. Lady Justice Brewing is best known not only for amazing beers and ciders but also for their truly amazing community impact. They have gone out of their way to actively support nearly every facet of the culture and community in Aurora. No matter where they are, they are committed to raising up women, girls, and nonbinary folks as an Englewood Brewery.
The Search for a New Home
Owners Lay and Alison Wisneski have spent the last nine months in a quiet but diligent quest for a new location. While they love their Aurora location there wasn’t the space for growth. The owners had to say no to so many opportunities because the location was so small (~90 people max). Committed to staying in Aurora, they faced the challenge that breweries need ample space and specialized equipment. Without a massive build-out, that would cost millions easily, they had to broaden their search. This wasn’t just about finding a new building; it was about preserving the essence of Lady Justice and its community-focused spirit.
A Serendipitous Encounter
The path to their new home at 3242 S. Acoma Street, behind the Gothic Theater in Englewood, has a touch of luck. Matt and Melanie, the owners of Sunroom Brewing, initially visited Lady Justice to learn about community support. This meeting laid the foundation for a future proposition that would shape the destiny of both breweries. The breweries stayed in contact, supporting each other however they could. When the Sunroom had to close its doors due to personal reasons they approached Lady Justice.
A Bittersweet Transition
In an interview with GayDenver, Alison Wisneski reflected on the move:
“It’s such a bittersweet moment. When [Sunroom Brewing] approached us, it was a shock but also exactly what we were looking for… The hardest part of leaving Aurora is the memories. So many events like baby showers, engagement parties, meet-ups, and truly amazing people and partnerships.”
This sentiment captures the complex emotions of leaving a beloved space and embracing an opportunity that aligns perfectly with their vision.
